JOB DESCRIPTION AFSCME Position

 

Position:  Paralegal
Grade:  16
Salary:  High $50s + Benefits
Location:  Domestic Relations Division

 

SUMMARY
Paralegals in the Domestic Relations Division assist attorneys in gathering, summarizing, organizing and maintaining information, conducting research, preparing legal pleadings, and conducting
interviews. As a professional partner in the service of children, the paralegal is expected to be familiar with and per form all duties consistent with the ethical requirements as set forth in the Illinois Supreme Court Rules, Article VIII, Code of Professional Responsibility.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following core duties are fundamental to the performance of the job. Other duties may be assigned
as needed and/or may be necessary to the performance of the job.
1. Maintain case assignment logs and case lists for attorneys.
2. Assist with intake of new cases.
3. Prepare case summaries.
4. Prepare fee petitions.
5. Prepare and file motions, petitions and subpoenas.
6. Assist with collection and processing of retainers and fees.
7. Review emails and forward to assigned attorney.
8. Research service options and other topics, and conduct follow up as requested.
9. Conduct legal research.
10. Conduct interviews, and contact parents, attorneys and other professionals as requested.
11. Deliver documents and files to attorneys as needed.
12. Prepare files for close out.
13. Assist with management of law clerk program.
14. Assist with special projects as needed.

 

QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. In addition, a paralegal must hold a post graduate certificate in Paralegal Studies from an American Bar Association approved
program or a law degree from an American Bar Association approved Law School. Must possess two (or more years of experience as a paralegal. Must possess excellent professional judgment, problem solving, analytical reasoning, communication, and interpersonal skills. Must be well organized, detail
oriented, have the ability to handle multiple tasks, work efficiently within a fast paced environment and meet constant deadlines. Must be able to work independently as part of an interdisciplinary team, and maintain a professional demeanor. Proficient legal research and computer skills necessary, including abilities in LexisNexis, Excel and Microsoft Office.
