Paralegal & Intake Specialist

PILI is hiring a Paralegal & Intake Specialist. This is a full-time position to be based in PILI’s Chicago office. This position will be part of PILI’s Programs Team and will work under the supervision of the Managing Attorneys, and work in coordination with all staff members to support PILI’s Pro Bono Program.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct preliminary intake interviews, gathering relevant facts and identifying legal issues;
Keep records and enter data in case management system, including demographic data and case notes;
Provide customer service that is culturally competent and empathetic;
Written correspondence, including with clients and pro bono volunteers;
Manage volunteer information and other administrative support of pro bono volunteers; and
Assist with outreach, help prepare for clinics and other pro bono project tasks as needed.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
Coordinate and collaborate with the other members of PILI’s Programs Team on programming and projects;
Assisting, as needed, in preparation of grant proposals and reports; and
Performing other duties as assigned by PILI’s Executive Director or Senior Managing Attorney.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from or current enrollment in an accredited paralegal program, or two or more years of experience supporting legal work;
Preference is given to applicants with Spanish language proficiency, oral and written;
The ability to travel, and work evenings and weekends as needed but with advance notice for special programs and events hosted by PILI;
A valid driver’s license;
Ability to self-support within a small nonprofit environment and proficiency with technology;
Experience using LegalServer (or similar computer-based case management system);
Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
Detail oriented with strong critical thinking and analytical skills; and
Understanding of and commitment to the mission and work of PILI.
Salary: This is a full-time position with a salary commensurate with experience within the range of $35,000 to $45,000, including a generous benefits package with employer-paid health insurance and retirement plan.
